The need to maintain a Timber Deck.
Timber decking is a natural product, When exposed to the elements of Sun, Heat, Water and wind, there is a natural reaction by the timber to protect itself by releasing extractives,

of these, Phenolic compounds are very powerful anti-oxidants and
can interfere with adhesion and the curing process of any surface coatings.
(Phenolic Compounds are especially prevalent in Spotted Gum Timbers, where as Tannin is the most prevalent in Merbau Timbers )
This all reflects on the need to prepare the decking surface properly, the one thing that is directly proportional to the life of a surface coating (New or Old) is in the preparation and cleanliness of the surface to be coated.
